URBAN DEVELOPMENT AND TRANSPORTATION Committee

Duties and Procedures

The purpose of this group is to create a forum where members can educate themselves about and advocate for improvements in those elements of the infrastructure for which civil engineers are responsible and to address Urban Development and Transportation issues.

Urban Development.  To advance the science of civil engineering by (1) promoting broader application of city or urban planning to the development and redevelopment of urban and related areas; (2) improving the civil engineer's understanding of and participation in urban planning, or collaboration therewith; (3) emphasizing environmental considerations and sustainable design in urban development; (4) encouraging area-wide transportation planning studies embracing all modes of transportation; (5) promoting coordinated planning and programming of public works; (6) working with other technical divisions of the Society in demonstrating how their operations are coordinated with and supplement urban development; and (7) fostering education and research in urban planning and development.

Transportation.  To advance the art and science of urban transportation engineering; to encourage and develop a cooperative effort of the divisions of the Society that are concerned with various aspects of this subject area; to encourage and develop cooperative participation with other technical and professional organizations operating in this subject area; to foster, stimulate, and provide facility for the exchange and general dissemination of information of significance to this subject area; to encourage education and research necessary to the advancement of engineering technique in this subject area; and to be a knowledge base for the promotion of coordinated regional planning and programming of transportation investment projects.
